Roles and responsibilities

You, your employer and your training provider have responsibilities to meet throughout your apprenticeship.

Your responsibilities

Before starting your apprenticeship you’re responsible for: 

  • reading and signing your apprenticeship agreement
  • discussing your training plan with your employer and training provider 
  • telling your employer and training provider about any learning needs or health issues you have 
  • knowing when your off-the-job OTJ training starts and ends 
  • understanding the roles of your employer and training provider during the apprenticeship 
  • understanding that you need to complete OTJ hours in your training plan during normal working hours

After becoming an apprentice you’re responsible for: 

  • attending all OTJ training and providing proof of your recorded hours
  • completing all your learning activities, assignments and exams 
  • taking part in regular progress reviews with your employer and training provider at least every 12 weeks 
  • agreeing with your employer and training provider when you’re ready to take an end-point assessment
  • knowing you’ll be assessed by an end-point assessment organisation (EPAO) at the end of your apprenticeship 
  • letting your employer know in advance if you can’t work 
  • letting your training provider know in advance if you aren’t able to attend OTJ training 
  • talking with your employer or training provider about any feedback, concerns or complaints you have

Your employer’s responsibilities

Your employer is responsible for: 

  • signing and providing you with a copy of your apprenticeship agreement that you agreed together
  • contributing to your training plan with you and your training provider 
  • supporting your learning needs during your apprenticeship 
  • giving you time to complete your OTJ training during normal working hours 
  • taking part in regular progress reviews with you and your training provider at least every 12 weeks 
  • working with you and your training provider to resolve any concerns or complaints 
  • carrying out an end of apprenticeship review with you

Your training provider’s responsibilities

Your training provider is responsible for: 

  • keeping a copy of the apprenticeship agreement signed by you and your employer
  • discussing your training plan with you and your employer and making sure it accounts for your prior learning, English and maths needs and any extra learning support 
  • providing you and your employer with start and end dates for your OTJ training 
  • explaining how your OTJ training will be delivered  managing the quality and delivery of your OTJ training and making sure it’s logged 
  • letting you and your employer know if any third parties will be delivering your training 
  • explaining how you’ll be assessed by an EPAO 
  • taking responsibility for regular progress reviews between all parties at least every 12 weeks 
  • making sure you and your employer know how to raise concerns or complaints about your training

Make a complaint

If you don’t think your employer or training provider are meeting their responsibilities, you can make a complaint. We’d recommend talking to them first to see if you can resolve the issue. Regular feedback sessions with your employer and training provider can also help.

If you’re still not happy after talking to them, you can make a complaint about a further education college or apprenticeship.
